Moskvorechie Trading has been active in the wholesale of automotive spare parts since 1994. The Moscow-based company is a member of the independent trading group AD Russia, which in turn belongs to an international trading group of distributors for automotive spare parts, AUTODISTRIBUTION INTERNATIONAL (ADI). In addition to the Moscow location, Moskvorechie Trading has branches in eleven other Russian cities. The company plans to expand its network of locations and increase its delivery service.

The company plans to expand its network of locations and increase its delivery service.

For this reason, Moskvorechie Trading commissioned viaLog to

  • develop a logistics concept for the new central warehouse in Moscow.

The challenge

Continued growth and the associated increase in freight handling volumes led to bottlenecks and problems with the existing logistics at the Moscow site. Moskvorechie Trading therefore intended to rent an existing building and relocate its entire Moscow logistics operations to a location closer to Moscow, as the growing freight handling volume could not be handled in Moscow itself. As no suitable property was initially available, the independent consulting firm viaLog Logistik Beratung GmbH was initially commissioned with logistics planning for a new distribution centre on a greenfield site. This preliminary planning enabled the requirements to be concretised and a suitable building to be identified. Once an existing property with 21,000 square metres of floor space on the outskirts of Moscow had been found, viaLog was commissioned to adapt the original plans accordingly.

The task

Moskvorechie Trading commissioned viaLog’s planners with

  • the creation of a logistics concept for a new distribution centre “on a greenfield site”,
  • the adaptation of this concept to the new rental property in the Lyubertsky district of the Moscow region,
  • the detailed planning and tendering of the logistics technology as well as
  • the introduction of a warehouse management system (creation of the specifications, tendering, support during the specification discussions).

The solution

The logistics concept developed by viaLog for Moskvorechie Trading is based on particularly efficient automation technology. All warehouse processes are controlled by WMS. The new central warehouse consists of the following elements:

  • WMS: The processes are largely paperless using electronic data capture.
  • Shelf platform system for small parts: The platform has approx. 60,000 linear metres of shelving and 8000 compartments for large and bulky parts.
  • Workstations: The central warehouse is equipped with 43 workstations in incoming goods and packing.
  • Conveyor technology: A container conveyor system for 2000 transports per hour and a pallet conveyor system for supplying and disposing of the small parts platform were implemented in the warehouse

The highlights

  • Multifunctional WMS: Stores and large online shops are supplied directly from the new central warehouse and third-party logistics are operated. A WMS controls all functions in parallel. Interfaces for the provision of information and processing strategies were customised.
  • A-items in the fast lane: A-items are picked on a platform system in a separate area. There, the articles are provided on pallets in flow channels. This means that picking can be carried out quickly and without any delays during provision.
  • Integrated automation option: The container consolidation is connected to the conveyor system. A later automation of this area by means of an automatic small parts shuttle warehouse is already planned and can be realised in the event of increasing capacity utilisation without costly conversion or even dismantling measures.

“During the project, we particularly appreciated the high level of professionalism of the viaLog team, which demonstrated its ability to respond to the client’s wishes and fulfil the task at a high level and within the specified deadlines. Previously, when looking for a consulting company on the Russian market, we were unfortunately unable to find an organisation of a comparable level for a long time.”
