IT and warehouse tuning for optimum telecoms service<\/h2>\n

As a leading provider of a wide range of telecommunications services and a global player, Deutsche Telekom AG has to manage complex logistics. Central Service Elmshorn provides spare parts and, as one of Deutsche Telekom AG’s six service centres, also repairs telecommunications equipment and components such as telephones and ISDN systems.<\/p>\n

A transformation from spare parts supplier to repair service provider has taken place. Instead of the telecoms company’s internal bulk shipping, customer-specific picking of individual parts was now required.<\/p>\n

The service centre in Elmshorn is highly automated:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • An automated high-bay warehouse (HRL) with approx. 10,000 pallet spaces<\/li>\n
  • An automated small parts warehouse (AKL) with approx. 25,000 container storage locations<\/li>\n
  • State-of-the-art conveyor technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The task<\/h2>\n

    The structure of the plant was only able to cope with the new task to a limited extent:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • The warehouse process computer (WPC), material flow computer (MFC) and programmable logic controller (PLC) components had reached their performance limits and were so outdated that spare parts were no longer available.<\/li>\n
    • The IT dialogues were complicated and could not map the new requirements accurately enough.<\/li>\n
    • “Gaps” in the conveyor technology made processing extremely difficult.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      viaLog was commissioned to optimise the IT infrastructure and IT processes as well as the conveyor technology, i.e.<\/p>\n

        \n
      • identify the actual processes and weak points,<\/li>\n
      • to draw up specifications for the LP system and MF system,<\/li>\n
      • to put the hardware and software out to tender,<\/li>\n
      • manage the introduction of the new software and<\/li>\n
      • optimisation of the conveyor technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The solution<\/h2>\n

        The IT and warehouse tuning described above is a typical example of the optimisation of highly automated distribution centres. A lack of flexibility in technically overloaded logistics centres becomes a problem if, for example, the order structure changes. The targeted “surgical cut”, the simultaneous optimisation of IT and equipment technology, can provide a remedy here – for a reasonable investment.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes” bb_tab_container=””][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

        The Hannover Repair Centre (IZE) repairs equipment from Deutsche Telekom AG and other manufacturers. On a workshop and storage area of 16,000 square metres, which is divided between two locations, 275 employees repair an average of 1,500 devices and assemblies every day.<\/p>\n

        The challenge<\/h2>\n

        The operators wanted to merge the two sites while simultaneously reducing the total usable area. The existing site was to be utilised as efficiently as possible while minimising construction and conversion costs. In addition, a consistent concept of workshop logistics and warehouse logistics had to be introduced that would allow flexible adaptation to different types of orders.<\/p>\n

        <\/h2>\n

        The task<\/h2>\n

        viaLog was commissioned to consolidate the logistics and workshop areas at one of the two locations. The total usable area was to be reduced by more than a third to approx. 10,000 square metres. For the new location, the consultants designed the material flow including layout, the corresponding equipment technology and the necessary data processing. As general planner, viaLog realised the concept and handled the relocation during ongoing operations.<\/p>\n

        The solution<\/h2>\n

        At the target location, the existing 3 halls with a total area of approx. 10,000 square metres were completely renovated. viaLog developed a flexible assembly concept tailored to the diverse nature of Telekom’s orders. Its area modules and transport routes were defined in such a way that the existing infrastructure can be retained even if the job profile changes or additional workshops and new technology are added.<\/p>\n

        The logistics concept customised by viaLog for Telekom is based on 4 technical pillars:<\/h3>\n
          \n
        • A horizontal carousel: <\/strong>In the automated warehouse, a total of 6,700 storage locations can be occupied in 6 carousels on 7 levels. Two height-adjustable working platforms allow access to all storage locations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • A vertical tray lift:\u00a0<\/strong>The semi-automatic small parts warehouse operates according to the “goods to man” principle. Three lifts with a height of 5 metres and 200 trays provide space for 3,400 containers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Container conveyor technology:\u00a0<\/strong>The container conveyor technology connects goods inwards, horizontal carousel, tray lifts and packing simply and effectively in a circle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                \n
              • An automated guided vehicle system (AGV):\u00a0<\/strong>Five vehicles are used for the unmanned transport of containers and pallet cages. The vehicles can hold 6 containers and pull lattice boxes behind them on a roller base. They serve 20 railway stations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                A WMS system is also used, which controls all the technologies mentioned and is characterised by its reliability. It also manages all the storage locations, manages the transport orders and provides the interface to the commercial IT programmes.<\/p>\n

                The highlights<\/h2>\n

                Adaptable infrastructure<\/h3>\n

                Areas and transport routes were defined modularly in the assembly concept. This enables a combination with structural extensions, new technology and other orders while retaining the infrastructure.<\/p>\n

                Secure DP<\/h3>\n

                A fail-safe warehouse management system is used, which controls all technologies, manages storage locations, manages transport orders and acts as the interface to the commercial IT programmes.<\/p>\n

                Ergonomics<\/h3>\n

                The conveyor technology is impressively quiet and the workstations are ergonomically designed. The air conditioning in the rooms and the ESD-compliant design of all construction and conveyor technology components ensure an exceptional working environment in logistics.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”telecom-site-development”][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

                Concept for site development, detailed planning, realisation<\/h2>\n

At the Hanover site, the Telekom Competence and Solution Centre Hardware Service handles logistics and service tasks for Telekom and external customers.<\/p>\n

                To further develop the site, the company commissioned viaLog with<\/p>\n
