The Versmold-based company H. & E. Reinert Westfälische Privat-Fleischerei GmbH & Co. KG is today one of the most modern sausage production facilities in Germany. With more than 1,300 employees in the group of companies, over 300 million euros in sales are generated annually with high-quality meat and sausage products at a total of three locations. The family-run business, now in its third generation, is internationally represented in the trade and the market and quality leader in the area of specialities at the sausage counter.

Increasing demand for meat products requires adjustment of logistics

The Reinert group of companies has developed very dynamically in recent years and has considerably changed its distributive structures. In 1998 there was only the location Versmold, which sold more than 80%, i.e. 17,000 tons per year in the food retail and wholesale trade. Already in 2003 the company consisted of four companies at six locations and four dispatch locations, had grown enormously in volume and had increased the discount share to 80%. The company locations range from Lörrach in southern Germany via Neuenkirchen-Vörden to Brunsbek in Holstein, where the customer can order from all ranges and from all locations with one order and is supplied with one shipment. The result: The exchange of goods between the locations is growing from year to year. The customer structure (retail trade, wholesale trade and discounters) also places very different demands on logistics, from freight traffic to picking comparatively small consignment sizes and quantities for discounters’ logistics, from branded goods to customer-specific goods. All these aspects made distribution logistics increasingly complex.

The task

The task for viaLog was: Analysis of the current distribution from a strategic point of view, determination of possible simplifications and cost reductions, development of a logistics strategy for the acquisition of further companies, statements on the development of the locations.

The solution

viaLog developed a comprehensive concept as a solution:

  • Optimization of transports in factory traffic and for the use of service providers
  • Intensification of the use of avalanche beacons in the sense of a group solution / standardisation

The study makes statements about the logistic structure organization anddevelops a master plan for the expansion of the large sites. In addition, logistical strategies for the acquisition of new companies were developed, as were rough concepts for space optimization and expansion of the locations developed.

Conclusion

The project delivers distribution strategies in the context of growth and company acquisitions, it provides an answer to various strategic questions and concretizes the expansion of the most important locations.
